Founding of the Central Asian Athletics Association
The Association was created as a regional platform to unite the athletics federations of Central Asia, develop competitions, support athletes and strengthen cooperation between the region’s sports organisations.
Background
By decision of the Olympic Council of Asia, the Asian continent was divided into five regions: East Asia, South-East Asia, South Asia, West Asia and Central Asia.
In Central Asia, the question of creating a separate athletics association became especially pressing by 2019. In winter 2019, at a meeting of the secretaries general of the National Olympic Committees of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, the revival of the Central Asian Games and closer cooperation between the region’s sports organisations were raised.
On 20 April 2019 the Founding Conference of the Central Asian Athletics Association was held in Doha, Qatar. The conference decided to establish the Association, elected its leadership and placed its official office in Tashkent.
